The game began by having 40 people sign up as their favorite Survivor castaway from the real show's seasons 13 and 14. There were no other real limitations on who they could pick to play as.
The 40 players were split into 4 tribes, based off the real show's tribes. Immediately, all 4 tribes were sent to Tribal Council (TC for short) where they had to each vote 1 member out solely based on first impressions.
For the first 8 rounds the tribes battled it out in team based Immunity Challenges. The winning tribes were spared from Tribal Council for the round in which they won, but the losing tribes went to Tribal Council and voted one of their own members out of the game.
Players were told that at any time in the game, 1 player from each tribe could mutiny to another tribe if they so wished. However, this was only available for the first from each tribe to do so. Unbeknownst to those who mutinied, Hidden Immunity Idols were given to those who did as a way to safely survive their new tribe.
At the F22, 2 of the 4 tribes were removed and all players were shuffled equally into the remaining 2 tribes. New chances (with the same rules) to mutiny were made available as well.
At the F10, the 2 tribes were joined together to form 1 larger, new tribe. This sparked a change in the game on several levels. Immunity was no longer a team effort. Instead, challenges were now individual with only 1 winner each time. Immediately, everyone was sent to TC where they had to vote 1 member out solely based on first impressions.
At the F3, those who received 12th-4th Place were brought back in order to vote for who they'd wish to win this game. They could only vote for 1 of the 3 players who made it to the end of the game.
